Agriculture Roundup for Friday June 12, 2020

Jun 12, 2020 | 10:26 AM

A farm group will list its concerns about business risk management (BRM) programs to the House of Commons Agriculture Committee this afternoon.

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) president Todd Lewis will present recommendations for changes BRM programs, including an increase to AgriStability coverage levels and an elimination of the reference margin limit.

APAS has been vocal about the need to reform BRM programs since 2013, when significant changes were made to AgriStability.

You can watch the live webcast of today’s presentation starting at 1 p.m. here.

A new record was established for the largest grain train loaded by CP Rail on the Prairies.

There were 224 hopper cars containing roughly 22,000 metric tonnes of durum shipped by rail from Gull Lake, Sask. to the Port of Thunder Bay.

The Gull Lake terminal recently completed a 8,500-foot track expansion, which gives them more flexibility to load large trains.

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank has paid tribute to a Saskatchewan farmer.

When Werner Zacharias passed away in 2017, he donated 190 acres of land near Fiske to be used each year to raise money for the organization.

Last year, area farmers grew a wheat crop that produced roughly 45 bushels an acre and generated $20,000.

The money was donated to Mennonite Central Committee to provide families with emergency food assistance.
