Jun 4, 2020 | 2:02 PM

There is one new case of COVID-19 in the province’s Saskatoon region, bringing the total number of cases to 648. Meanwhile the province said it would have more information on the re-opening of playgrounds next week.

Also, the province’s chief medical health officer suggested it could take another full year for things to get back to normal regarding the lifting of all restrictions.

Of all cases reported, 29 are considered active. There have been six new recoveries, bringing the recovered total to 608.

Two people are in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Saskatoon.

Of the 648 cases, 143 are travellers, 389 are community contacts (including mass gatherings), 77 have no known exposures and 39 are under investigation by local public health.

Across the province 51 cases are health care workers, although not all sourced their infections at work. In the Far North there are 257 cases. There are 170 from the Saskatoon area, 112 from the North, 80 from the Regina area, 17 from the South and 12 from the central region.

Fifty-two per cent of cases are females and 48 per cent are males.

Eleven people have died from COVID-19 in the province.

To date, 49,915 COVID-19 tests have been performed in the province.

Parks and Playgrounds

In their daily update the provincial government said it recognized there was a desire for parks and playgrounds to re-open.

Although green spaces continue to remain open, playgrounds are closed. Public health measures are currently being developed for the safe re-opening of playgrounds. Further details will be available next week.

Premier Scott Moe said he understands parents are concerned about lack of activities for kids to do as other sectors of the province open up.

“We’re working very hard to come up with some new parameters where we can safely get our kids out, and get back to a new normal, if you will, in our communities not just from an economic perspective,” he said.

Moe said new opening dates for playgrounds, parks, beaches and some medical services will be announced next week.

“We’re working very hard to reopen as much as can as quickly as we can, but we need to do so safely because the COVID-19 virus has not gone away,” he said.

When will Phase 5 come?

It could take even longer to get completely back to normal, though.

Dr. Saqib Shahab, the province’s chief medical health officer, said he doesn’t expect the fifth phase, meaning all restrictions dropped, until June 2021.
