Strong winds damage trees

Crews from the City of Prince Albert are dealing with damage caused by high winds.

City Parks Manager Tim Yeaman said workers were called out to deal with wind damage to trees.

“We had a couple of trees over the weekend that came down,” he said.

Yeaman said they have not had a large amount of calls Monday afternoon, but added forestry crews are out responding to calls.

“There could be breaks or cracks in some of those trees, but the results of the high winds may not be noticeable until later this week,” he said.

The parks manager said they would encourage residents when they are out and around to keep their eyes open for damaged trees. Yeaman said this includes branches which are hanging or even a tree being split. Yeaman said once a damaged tree is reported, work gets underway quite quickly.

“What they’ll do is they’ll do a work order up and we’ll make sure those get out to the crews right away,” he said.

For residents Yeaman said it is important for them to make sure they are taking care of the trees on their properties. He added anyone who has questions can reach out to the city for guidance.

“They’re more than welcome to call community services. We’ll try and help them as best as we can,” he said.

Beware when trees contact power lines

SaskPower Media Relations Consultant Scott McGregor said there were not any outages reported in the City of P.A. this weekend due to the wind. McGregor said if people notice a line damaged by a tree branch they should make sure to keep their distance.

“We recommend you maintain 10 meters or 30 feet or greater,” he said.

McGregor said people should then call SaskPower at 310-2220 and crews will be dispatched to deal with the problem.

Director of Public Affairs Lyle Karasiuk said paramedics were called out after an older man was loading groceries into his car and was knocked down after the wind blew his vehicle door into him. The man required medical attention, Karasiuk said.
