P.A. expected to see windy weather continue into the evening

Wind warnings have ended for the City of Prince Albert.

However, Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said residents will still feel winds into the evening.

“We’re still expecting quite gusty winds through the rest of the day,” she said.

Lang said windy conditions generally calm down once the sun goes down. She added the winds P.A. experienced were caused by a low-pressure system which started in British Columbia. As the system moved into Alberta, severe thunderstorms and a tornado were seen.

The system is expected to make its way into Manitoba later this evening.

“Those two combined we’ll see a slow gradual decrease in those speeds,” Lang said.

Wind warnings are generally issued with winds at 60 km/h with winds gusting to 90.

According to Lang it is not uncommon to see these kinds of winds during this time of year. She explained the conditions which see cold air to the Morth and warmer air to the South making its way to the province lead to these type of conditions.

Lang said the city could see some more winds, albeit not as strong, when a similar system is expected to come through.

“Probably Wednesday to Thursday it looks like we have another weather system coming through that [will] bring us some wind,” she said.

To deal with windy conditions, Lang said Environment and Climate Change Canada recommends people make sure their trees are properly maintained to avoid dead branches from breaking off. She said they also advise people to secure items on their property if strong winds are in the forecast.

“Anything that can blow around, we ask people to kind of tuck that stuff away, so it doesn’t become flying projectiles,” she said.
