Nobody had a better year of coaching minor hockey in Saskatchewan this year than Prince Albert’s Steve Young.

Young was presented the Saskatchewan Hockey Association’s Outstanding Coach Award on Thursday.

He led the Prince Albert Lehner Electric Female Bantam AA Foxes to a berth in the provincial finals. The Foxes were 14-5-5 in the regular season, two points away from first place in the league.

In the playoffs, the Foxes swept the Warman Wildcats, 3-1 and 4-3 in overtime in the first round. The Foxes then swept the Regina Rebels 4-0 and 5-4 in the second round.

The Foxes advanced to the provincial finals to face the top-ranked Swift Current Wildcats March 15-23, but the series was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Before getting involved with minor hockey, Young was a mainstay with the Prince Albert Raiders from 2008-13.

He was the team’s assistant general manager and associate coach behind Bruno Campese from 2008 to 2012, before taking over as head coach midway through the 2011-12 season. Young then led the Raiders to a 37-28-0-7 record in the 2012-13 season, before getting knocked out of the first round by the Red Deer Rebels.
