Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday May 27, 2020

May 27, 2020 | 9:39 AM

Rain slowed seeding progress yesterday for many farmers.

Environment Canada reported 5.2 millimetres at Melfort and 7.5 millimetres at the Nipawin airport.

The Prince Albert area received 9.3 millimetres while North Battleford didn’t record any precipitation.

Showers are expected throughout the day with a return to sunshine and warmer temperatures tomorrow.

Saskatchewan recorded a decline in realized net farm income last year, which is the difference between a farmer’s cash receipts and operating expenses, minus depreciation, plus income in kind.

Statistics Canada reported realized net farm income in Saskatchewan was $1.68 billion in 2019 down 15.6 per cent.

Some of the reasons include a drop in canola prices and the effect of China imposing trade restrictions against two major Canadian canola exporting companies.

The federal government will be putting $9.2 million into a program to hire young people for agriculture jobs.

Agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said Youth Employment and Skills program will fund up to 700 new positions.

Agriculture employers can receive up to 50 per cent of the cost of hiring a young person up to $14,000.

Indigenous applicants and those hiring youth facing barriers are eligible for funding of up to 80 per cent of their costs.

Employers may apply for the funding retroactive to April 1 this year with projects to be completed by March 31, 2021.
