Fire department urging people to be considerate as weather warms

The Prince Albert Fire Department wants the public to keep a few things in mind when using their backyard fire pits.

Chief Kris Olsen said it’s important citizens be aware of the bylaws governing the use of fire pits. He explained residents should be considerate of those around them.

“It’s about using common courtesy and being mindful of wind conditions and being mindful or your fire as well,” he said.

This past weekend the fire department received a call where people burned improper items in a pit which wasn’t approved.

Olsen said the department does get called out often to deal with backyard fires. He added the issue is usually one of two things.

“It’s either the container or what’s being burnt,” he said.

The fire chief said residents should be aware a fire pit needs to meet certain requirements. Specifically, the pit needs to have a heavy screen covering. Olsen said people with questions about these regulations are encouraged to contact them.

“Our inspectors will be happy to assist with that,” he said.

The fire department also wants residents to remember they can only burn seasoned cut firewood. This is to ensure the fire doesn’t give off too much smoke.

There are no fire bans in the city limits, Olsen said with the recent rain the city got the conditions are not too dry. He added when it comes to backyard fires they simply encourage people to be considerate.

“We just encourage people to be mindful of their neighbour’s and burn responsibly,” he said.
