Two new cases of COVID-19 in Far North, province sets target for next reopen phase

May 21, 2020 | 2:14 PM

There are two new cases of COVID-19 in the province’s Far North, bringing the total in Saskatchewan to 622.

Of the total cases, 106 are considered active. There are 15 new recoveries, bringing the total to 509.

Premier Scott Moe said door to door testing in La Loche is complete.

“Today I can confirm that the testing teams have been to each and every door in the community of La Loche,” he said at a press conference earlier today.

Across the province, five people are in hospital with two receiving inpatient care in Saskatoon and Regina. Three patients are receiving intensive care in Saskatoon.

Of the province’s 622 cases, 139 are travellers, 348 are community contacts (including mass gatherings), 72 have no known exposures and 63 are under investigation by local public health.

There are 49 cases involving health care workers, although not all sourced their infections at work. There are 244 cases from the Far North, 165 from the Saskatoon area, 110 from the North, 76 from the Regina area, 15 from the South and 12 from the central region.

There are 89 cases involving people aged 19 and younger.

For the 20 to 39 age range there are 223 cases, 188 in the 40 to 59 age range, 104 in the 60 to 79 age range, and 18 in the 80-plus range.

Fifty-one per cent of cases are females and 49 per cent are males.

Seven people have died from COVID-19 to date.

Until today, 42,443 tests for COVID-19 have been performed in the province.

Phase three target date

The province’s targeted date to enter phase three of the re-open plan is June 8.

The announcement comes after phase two of the plan began this week. In this upcoming phase, restaurants and licensed establishments can open at 50 per cent capacity.

Premier Moe said June 8 is a target date and it will be adjusted if needed.

“We’ve just begun phase two so it’s too early to tell what impact if any it will have on our numbers,” he said.

Moe said the limit for outdoor gatherings will increase from 10 to 30 so long as people are following good physical distancing practices.

“Now while 30 may not seem like a lot of people, it would allow for such occasions as a small outdoor wedding ceremony or a small graveside memorial service for a loved one,” he said.

The next phase will include opening gyms, fitness facilities, and places of worship will open subject to guidelines still under development.

Certain services that did not open in this week’s phase will be able to provide services.

This includes:

  • Estheticians;
  • Tattoo artists;
  • Make-up applicators;
  • Electrologists;
  • Manicurists;
  • Pedicurists;
  • Sun tanning parlours;
  • Facilities in which body piercing, bone grafting or scarification services are provided.

The size of indoor public and private gatherings will expand to 15 people in phase three.

The updated plans and guidelines will be available on Friday.

While the plan and target date are in place, not all businesses are required to open at this time, if the owner determines a safer time to operate in the future.
