Local community foundation to help federal government distribute funds

The Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation (PAACF) is ready to help local groups.

The organization has teamed up with the federal government to help distribute funding from the emergency community support fund. The federal government has committed $350 million to help local charities.

Marilyn Peterson, executive director with P.A. and Area Community Foundation, said they started accepting applications Tuesday. She expects lots of interest from local organizations as they have been working to make people aware of the support.

“I am expecting quite a large number,” she said.

Peterson added the initial feedback she has received has been positive. Groups that are interested in applying for the grants can visit Community Foundations of Canada website. The P.A. Community Foundation will put the applications on their website, but are currently experiencing some technical difficulties.

The community foundation executive director said it is especially good for groups to have financial support available to them now with many getting ready to open back up.

Eligible projects can include ones which address needs caused by the COVID-19 virus, serve one or more vulnerable groups and can be completed by March 31, 2021.

The initiative is seeing the Government of Canada partner with Community Foundations of Canada, the United Way and the Canadian Red Cross. For P.A. and surrounding area, the local community foundation will also be accepting applications on behalf of the United Way for the area.

Peterson explained applications will be gone over by a local committee before being sent to the federal government for final approval. Once their application is approved, Peterson said groups can expect to see money coming in not long after.

“Within a week or so after that, I understand we could be sending out funds electronically and they’re off and working,” she said.
