Council to decide how to spend $5.1 million in provincial infrastructure funding

May 19, 2020 | 9:38 AM

Prince Albert city council is set to reconvene Tuesday night where the big item on the agenda will be how to spend $5.1 million of provincial infrastructure funding.

City administration is recommending the money be split between 11 projects. Three are new projects, while the remaining eight have previously been approved by council to be paid for through borrowing or from various city funds.

The largest project on the list, coming in at $2.25 million, is the underground servicing for the Marquis Road West extension. This year’s construction on the new West Hill arterial road was to be funded from debt financing.

The city’s politicians will also decide whether to allocate money towards renovations at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club and discuss if water shut offs for homes that have not had a smart meter installed should be suspended during the pandemic.

Notably absent from the meeting’s agenda is the 3rd reading of the Alley Access Bylaw. Mayor Greg Dionne had previously said council would delay giving the bylaw final approval until he was able to meet with Prince Albert Grand Council Chief Brian Hardlotte. Hardlotte has raised concerns the measure would increase discrimination against Indigenous people.
