MLCN councillor facing impaired driving charge

May 13, 2020 | 1:55 PM

An elected band councilor for Montreal Lake Cree Nation is facing charges of driving while impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and refusing to provide a breath sample.

Cal Henderson is scheduled to make his next appearance at Prince Albert Provincial Court on July 2. The alleged incident happened on May 3.

A spokesperson for the RCMP told paNOW a vehicle was observed driving erratically on Highway 969, which runs past the reserve, and the vehicle was stopped on Highway 2 North.

A check stop has remained at the entrance to the community for weeks.

Chief Frank Roberts declined comment when contacted by paNOW, and indicated he was on holiday. Vice Chief Dean Henderson, who is in charge in Roberts’s absence, also declined comment.

According to the MLCN website, Henderson is responsible for a number of portfolios including justice, housing, land resources and membership registration.
