For sale: award-winning resort

May 13, 2020 | 4:46 PM

A popular destination for wedding receptions, and avid golfers, could be under new ownership.

The Elk Ridge Golf and Conference Centre is listed on the Colliers Saskatoon website. The sale includes the 27-hole golf course, aquatic centre, conference room facilities, and the 39 cottages and town homes. Lakeland and District Reeve Cheryl Bauer-Hyde told paNOW she was not surprised by the news.

“I understood over the last year or two there had been some indication that Elk Ridge may be looking for a new owner,” she said.

Arne Petersen bought the property in 1989, and immediately got to work on his massive development plans. The first nine holes were completed four years later, and by 2003, there were three ‘nines’ in operation. In more recent years, Petersen’s daughter looked after the property.

There’s no mention of an asking price on the sale listing but a brochure on the website invites interested purchasers to submit an offer. The brochure also mentions future development plans including expansion of the lodge, and cabin sites.

“I would hope that there’s a viable option and new owner for Elk Ridge so it can continue to grow and remain that destination place,” Bauer-Hyde said.

The golf course which is scheduled to open later this month, won numerous awards and hosted a number of big tournaments including the Canadian Senior Women’s Championship, the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Men’s and Women’s Championship, and the Saskatchewan Mixed Championship. Saskatoon’s David Stewart won the mid-amateur event in 2015, and has competed at numerous other events as well.

“Elk Ridge is a fantastic course. The course conditions were some of the best in the province and the natural beauty of the surroundings always made it one of my favourite places to play. I really hope there’s a group of owners who can continue a similar business model forward,” he said.

The resort itself is a popular place for wedding receptions, but has also hosted a number of other events including the Kyla Art Show and the Sask. Party’s Caucus retreat.

As a result of COVID-19, the resort has been closed since March 26, but according to the business’s Facebook page, new bookings will start May 15.

“Updates will be provided on a regular basis as we manuever through this unfortunate situation. Please stay safe and keep an eye on others. We hope to see you at a future date, and will be ready to welcome you back when our doors re-open,” the posting read.

Editor’s note: a previous version of this story listed the adventure park as part of the sale. While the brochure indicates the TreeOsix Adventure park as a feature of the property sale, the operators have contacted paNOW and indicated their company is not for sale. They simply lease the land from the property owner.
