Yard waste collection begins in P.A.

Yard waste collection begins this week in Prince Albert.

Paper bags full of leaves and grass clippings will be collected on the same day as residents’ regular recycling pick up.

City Sanitation Manager Nisar Ghani asked people to avoid filling the bags in advance.

“Because of the rain, the bag will get damaged and then it’s a mess in the back alley or the front street,” he explained. “People should put the yard waste in the paper bag on the same day as recycling, that would be great.”

There is no limit to the number of bags that will be collected per household, but no bag may weigh more than 25 kilograms. Branches less than one-metre long can be placed beside yard waste bags for pick up. Larger branches must be brought to the landfill.

Compost nearly ready

Meanwhile Prince Albert is set to begin to reap the rewards of years of yard waste collection.

The first compost since the city made the switch to paper bags in 2017 will soon be ready.

“Once it’s ready, we would like people to take it and use it,” Ghani said.

Once the fertilizer is ripe, the city will make an announcement and invite the public to sign up to receive some for their gardens.
