Campground vandal will spend summer in jail

May 9, 2020 | 10:00 AM

A man responsible for causing over $20,000 in damages at a local campground will not be forced to pay restitution, and has received an eight month jail sentence.

Glen Halkett, 24, was sentenced Friday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Guilty pleas were entered on a number of mischief related charges, in connection to the incident on Feb. 9th, at the privately owned site north of Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

On the day in question, a total of seven camper trailers were ransacked, and a $6,000 quad was also stolen. The quad was never recovered.

According to the statement of facts read in court, Halkett paid over $1,000 for two men to help him, with plans to re-sell any “toys” they found.

The Crown was seeking an 18 month sentence, as well as an order for restitution. Citing serious concerns with Halkett’s ability to pay, and explaining any imposed order would be meaningless, Judge E. Kalenith denied the request for restitution to be paid.

“It’s not a realistic prospect,” he said.

The owners of the campground, who asked not to be identified due to safety concerns, told paNOW they felt Halkett’s sentence was too light. They also expressed concern about whether the incident would have an impact on customers returning.

Halkett, who was on a conditional sentence order (CSO) at the time of the offence, has 76 days remaining in custody on that order, before starting his new sentence.

The two co-accused, Winston Frenchman and Dean Bird, have pending dates before the court.
