Local residents encouraged to be vigilant, in wake of recent grass fires

For the second time in two days, the Lakeland and District Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the Paddockwood area.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, crews responded to a grass fire south east of the community.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a 20 acre fire burning in a yard site. The fire was a controlled burn that got out of control. Fire Chief Chris McShannock informed paNOW there was no damage to the property.

The incident follows a 10 acre grass fire Wednesday afternoon, west of Paddockwood. The fire in that case was determined to be accidental and was caused by a burning barrel. An old greenhouse was lost, as well as fencing materials. McShannock encouraged residents to be responsible with recreational and controlled fires.

“If they are not experienced in conducting or set up to facilitate a control burn with adequate equipment, manpower, and precautions, they should not attempt burning of grasses,” he said, adding when conditions are dry it only takes a few sparks, or a wind gust to take a small fire to the out of control status.

Meanwhile a separate grass fire was continuing to burn Friday in the Fort de la Corne area east of Prince Albert. Provincial wildland firefighting resources have been assigned to it, and there is no threat to structures or infrastructure at this time.
