Wahpeton postpones election amid COVID concerns

May 1, 2020 | 5:38 PM

This month’s scheduled election at Wahpeton Dakota Nation has been postponed two months.

The decision to change the original May 29th date comes after a week-long consultation involving Chief and Council with the community and legal counsel.

In the interest of keeping the membership safe and continuing efforts to combat the spread of the COVID-19 disease, it was decided the best option was to re-schedule the election to July 29.

A Band Council Resolution has been sent to Indigenous Services Canada to confirm the decision.

A state of emergency remains in effect at the first nation north of Prince Albert, and check stops will continue for the time being. According to a sign at the band’s entrance, all vehicles will be stopped and will be captured by security cameras.
