Patient at Victoria Hospital tests positive for COVID-19

May 1, 2020 | 1:19 PM

A patient at the Victoria Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a media release Friday, the Saskatchewan Health Authority said there is currently no evidence of transmission within the facility. However, Medical Health Officer Khami Chokani has declared an outbreak at the Victoria Hospital because of how long the patient stayed there before the virus was detected.

Staff who have been in close contact with the patient are self-isolating. Contact tracing and investigation are underway to ensure all of the patient’s contacts are identified.

The patient was initially admitted to the Victoria Hospital on April 21 for a non-COVID-19 related medical need. Before being transported to the Victoria Hospital, the patient tested negative.

All patients undergo a verbal risk assessment screen upon admission. The patient screened negative. On Thursday it was determined that an additional test was required, and the positive result was reported the same day.

Service changes are being made to adapt to decreased staffing levels at the hospital given the number of staff now required to isolate. As a result, one patient has been transferred from ICU to Saskatoon.

Further service changes required will be communicated once known. The Emergency Department remains open at this time. Patients who require emergency care should continue to seek service as usual.
