Prince Albert food trucks face uncertain summer season

Apr 30, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Prince Albert food trucks are feeling the affects of a COVID-19 economy.

Kyra Robillard is the owner/operator of the ‘Baby Got Bannock’ food truck.

After a busy winter catering season, she was looking forward to hitting the ground running heading into the summer. Then COVID-19 became a reality and her planned catered events were postponed or cancelled.

“Right now, I’m just taking it day by day. I still have high hopes, I might apply for my business license in Prince Albert, but I’m not even sure that’s a step (I’ll take) based on how this pandemic is going,” Robillard told paNOW.

She added a number of factors are hurting food truck business owners.

Not only is general foot traffic down, major events such as Street Fair have been moved to later in the year or have been cancelled altogether.

She explained it’s also been hard to source ingredients.

“I can’t seem to find any flour in the city either, and I go through quite a bit owning a bannock truck,” Robillard said.

Outside those factors she also worries about the safety of her and her staff.

She is holding out hope the COVID-19 situation will improve and is tentatively eyeing July as a potential start date. She added she will take her lead from other’s in the food industry.

“I don’t want to open unless restaurants are open,” Robillard noted.

Other food trucks contacted by paNOW explained due to the uncertain nature of COVID-19 situation they are currently unsure if they will be operating their food trucks this year.
