Long-running summer event pushed back due to COVID-19

Prince Albert’s annual downtown street fair is being pushed back.

The Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District (PADBID) has announced the event is being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Carolyn Carleton, executive director for PADBID, said the current timelines set out by the provincial government do not allow for big events.

“As you look through the different phases, the most that they’ve mentioned is up to 30,” she said.

The event was originally set to go on June 20. Carleton said they are still holding out hope they will be able to put the fair on in the fall. She added they will be holding onto any applications which have been submitted by vendors and continue to reevaluate.

“We’ll just keep watching the situation and see how things move forward,” she said.

Carleton said having the fair hinges on them being able to adhere to public health regulations.

The new University of Saskatchewan campus and the opening of some new businesses in the area made for lots of optimism according to Carleton. But the postponement of the street fair and the COVID-19 situation has put a halt to much of the momentum for the downtown.

“I was really looking forward to street fair this year,” she said.

While businesses do have their doors closed to the public, Carleton said some have been using the time to do renovations. She added PADBID is also thinking about what they can do for the area when all restrictions are lifted.

“We’re working on doing a re-launching the downtown campaign when retail is able to open again,” she said.
