Stranded deer makes it to shore during breakup

Apr 28, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The fate of multiple deers videoed on top of ice floe during the April 26, breakup of the North Saskatchewan River remains unknown.

According to one eyewitness, two deer were seen at 11:02 a.m. and 11:12 a.m. respectively being swept downriver aboard blocks of ice.

With raging water and handrail demolishing force it seems their chances to survive the currents were slim.

However, another video captured later in the day may give a glimmer of hope to those wishing for a happy ending.

Rita Buzzard captured one deer’s dramatic escape around 4 p.m. the same day. She was positioned on the north side of the river alongside Riverside Drive.

Sadly, due to the timeline of the video it’s clear the deer captured in Rita’s video is not the deer spotted earlier.

It does however open the possibility, that despite being caught in the swell, the other deer may also have been able to make it to shore safely.
