The victim of a homicide in northern Saskatchewan will be formally laid to rest Saturday afternoon.

The funeral for Skylar Fern (Smith) has been scheduled to take place at the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Church in Fond-du-Lac.

The 18-year-old, who has described by family as very athletic, as well as kind and humble, was found injured last Saturday at a residence in the community and was later pronounced deceased in hospital. A 19-year-old woman was also found injured.

Skylar’s death has impacted the whole community, and residents have been asked by family to hang jerseys in their windows to pay tribute to the young man who had a deep passion for the game. (Facebook/ Evan Fern))

Mackenzie Funeral Home has helped the Fern family with the funeral arrangements and the visitation was held last Wednesday in Prince Albert. Funeral home director Brian Stobbs told paNOW over 100 people attended the funeral home over the course of an hour. Due to COVID-10 protocols, only 10 people were allowed inside the actual viewing room at one time. Stobbs said staff helped make sure large crowds did not gather outside as well.

Anyone wishing to send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Skylar, can do so through the funeral home’s website.

When his body was transported back to Fond-du-Lac Wednesday night, community members were there waiting with their hockey sticks and jerseys on.

The man charged in connection to Fern’s death, was 19-year-old Jacob John Paquette. His matters will be spoken to Tuesday at La Ronge Provincial Court, but it’s not clear whether Paquette will appear via video, in person, or have his attendance waived.
