Vehicle thefts in Prince Albert not slowing down

Apr 22, 2020 | 2:13 PM

A 20-year-old man charged in connection to a vehicle theft and brief pursuit through the city made his first court appearance Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Sean Des Rabbitskin is facing a number of charges including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and breach of a previous court order.

The incident happened Tuesday morning in the 400 block of 21st St. E., and the initial report of the stolen vehicle was received by police at 6:45 a.m. The suspect vehicle was located soon after, but the driver failed to stop and attempted to flee. A tire disabling device was deployed by officers, and the suspect was arrested without incident.

According to the most recent statistics from police presented at this week’s Board of Police Commissioners meeting, there were 75 reported vehicle thefts in the city between Jan. 1 and March 31. For the month of March alone there were 19.

A spokesperson for the police service told paNOW most of the thefts are crimes of opportunity — as the majority of vehicles were left unlocked. Drivers are again reminded to keep all valuables out of sight, and not to hide the keys or key fobs in places where they may easily located by thieves.
