Provincial COVID-19 total at 316 with 74 active cases

As of today, April 20, the province has one new case of COVID-19. That brings the provincial total to 316 reported cases. As the government released the latest figures it stressed the arrival of warm weather was no reason for people to ease up on public health orders.

Of the 316 total cases in Saskatchewan, 74 are considered active. Four more people have recovered, bringing the recovery total to 238.

Four people are in hospital, with three receiving inpatient care. One person is in the intensive care unit.

Of the total amount, 134 cases are travel-related, 132 cases are contacts or linked to mass gatherings, 30 have no known exposures and 20 are under investigation by public health.

Across the province, 35 cases are health care workers, although not all were infected at work. There are 149 cases in the Saskatoon area, 70 from the Regina area, 60 from the North, 15 from the South, 11 from the province’s central region, and 11 from the Far North.

There were 24 cases involving people under the age of 19, with the remainder of cases infecting adults.

In the 20 to 39 age range there were 114 cases, 106 in the 40 to 59 age range, 63 in the 60 to 79 age range, and nine are in the 80-plus range.

Fifty-two per cent of cases are males and 48 per cent are females.

Four people have died from COVID-19 in the province.

To date, 24,412 tests for the virus have been performed.

Warmer weather does not change public health order

The sunny skies and surging temperatures are no reason to disobey public health orders, the province said.

When going outside, remember to maintain a distance of two metres from other people, avoid shared public surfaces, keep children away from group settings, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds when you return home, the province said.

Provincial parks are closed. Several local municipalities have closed playgrounds.

The province’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab says people should remember public health measures while they are out enjoying warm weather this week.

He said people can still visit outside if they meet on a walk, but to take precautions.

“Certainly greet, have a chat, but maintain that two-plus meter distance,” he said.

Interprovincial Travel

Shahab said Northern Saskatchewan Medical Health Officers are conducting an in-depth investigation into COVID-19 cases related to travel to Northern Alberta.

“First of all, you know, obviously let individuals participate in essential industries as much as possible, but then a special caution that as people come back if they were exposed in a setting to a case or otherwise were in a facility where there were cases there’s some additional precautions,” he said.

Northern Saskatchewan residents returning from Alberta are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days.
