Raiders Replay; reliving Game 5 of Eastern Conf. finals against the Oil Kings

Apr 17, 2020 | 2:25 PM

On CKBI, we’re reliving three important games during the Prince Albert Raiders’ run to the 2019 Ed Chynoweth Cup on our new program called ‘Raider Replay.’ On Friday at 7 p.m., we’ll re-run our second ‘Raider Replay,’ Game 5 of the WHL Eastern Conference finals against the Edmonton Oil Kings, originally broadcasted on April 26, 2019.

Ah, the Eastern Conference Finals between the Prince Albert Raiders and the Edmonton Oil Kings. As fun as it is to look back on the series now, it was an absolute grind for both sides at times in the series. Especially after Game 3 when the Raiders suffered what would be their worst defeat of the playoffs, a 5-1 loss to fall behind 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Even though the Raiders were far from their best in Game 3, Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said he didn’t have to tell his team too much to get them back on track. He just showed them the game tape the following morning—and that seemed to speak for itself.

“They’re smart, we trust them. As coaches and players, we get each other,” Habscheid said. “We just let them watch last night’s game after breakfast and asked them after what they thought. They’re smart. They’ve had enough. And the Raiders are back.”

The Raiders rebounded with a big 2-1 victory in Game 4 to tie up the series at 2-2, setting up an important Game 5 match up.

The big boys in Brett Leason and Noah Gregor both scored for the Raiders in Game 4. Ian Scott made 25 saves on 26 shots to keep the Oil Kings at bay. Dylan Myskiw stopped 25 of 27 in goal for the Oil Kings.

“I just liked the energy,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said after Game 4. “The energy was there. The skating legs, the effort, that’s what we look for. That’s our foundation. It certainly wasn’t there in Game 3, but it was there in Game 4. You can talk about structure all you want — you can put shingles on the house, but you need the foundation.”

So relive the action on CKBI starting at 7 p.m. with Trevor Redden. He’ll catch up with some players and coaches in the intermission for a fresh look back at the game.
