No Raider was in better shape than Evan Herman

He may be a 5-9 rookie, but nobody on the Prince Albert Raiders was in better shape than Evan Herman.

Herman won the Best Conditioned Raider for his past season after appearing in 59 of the 64 games as a first-year forward as a 17-year-old. He scored nine goals and 22 points.

“Winning this award means a lot to me,” Herman said on Raider Vision. “I’m very proud, but it comes with a lot of work from others like Puff (athletic therapist Duane Bartley), for taking care of us on the medical side, or Terry (Lange, strength and conditioning coach) working with us in the gym. And also my teammates who push and get the best of me every day.”

A huge part of conditioning for hockey players is what they do in the offseason. Along with the usual hockey training, Herman also is sure to mix in some water skiing.

“In the summer, I do a lot of water sports and do some water skiing and we have our own little training group here of buddies who play junior hockey, also,” Herman said. “We push each other, they get the best of me and make me better. I hope I’m doing the same for them, I think that’s a huge part of my summer training.”

Since the offseason is a little longer this year, Herman has extended it to juggling while ice water fishing, as part of the Raiders’ online skill competition.

But even more than winning this award for being in tip-top shape, or scoring any of his nine goals this season, Herman said the best part of the year was playing in front of a raucous Art Hauser Centre crowd.

“Before coming to P.A., I never experienced something so loud and so energetic,” Herman said. “What I like the most about this season was you guys; you made it so much fun playing in front of you. I look forward to doing it again next year, and I can’t wait.”
