Saskatchewan Polytechnic steps up to help fight virus

Apr 15, 2020 | 4:08 PM

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has made a contribution to help the province fight the COVID-19 virus.

The school has donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the government. The equipment includes masks, gloves and gowns. The school was also able to contribute hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes.

Cheryl Schmitz, vice president of administrative services and director of emergency operations for Saskatchewan Polytechnic said given they are a provincial institution it was important to them for their contribution to be shared with the entire province. She added the equipment will be distributed to where it is most needed.

“We did not want to put stipulations on it; we just provided it,” she said.

Schmitz explained the donation came about after they were approached by the provincial government requesting equipment.

The school had the personal protective equipment on hand as it is used in many programs to help protect students and staff. Some of the equipment was also used by staff on campus to provide support services.

When the items were collected from the campus, Schmitz said they had a small number of employees go to each campus to pick up the equipment to ensure it was done as safely as possible.

Schmitz said they are happy to be able to do their part by making the donation. She said the school was also proud to help out as many of those on the front lines are people who have come through the doors of the institution.

“A lot of our [former] students are now working in the healthcare field,” she said.
