Raiders head online to recognize award winners

Apr 14, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Without being able to hold a physical awards banquet this year, the Prince Albert Raiders have found another way to recognize the team’s outstanding performers for the 2019-20 WHL Season.

This morning, the club began announcing its award winners online, and will continue to do so in the coming days.

The first honouree was forward Aliaksei Protas, who earned the Dave Balon Leading Scorer Award presented by Northern Lights Casino.

Protas, the second-year forward from Belarus, led the Raiders in all offensive categories this season scoring 31 goals along with 49 assists in just 58 games played. Following an impressive 40-point rookie campaign last season, his game found another level in the 2019 WHL Playoffs with 22 points in 23 games en route to the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

In June 2019, Protas was selected 91st overall by the Washington Capitals, signing an entry-level contract with the club shortly afterwards. After spending training camp in Washington and getting a taste of NHL pre-season action, the “Viper of Vitebsk” got straight to work in Prince Albert, earning Eastern Conference first-team all-star recognition.
