Mann Gallery accepting submissions for high school show

Apr 10, 2020 | 10:00 AM

The Mann Art Gallery may be closed to the public, but the Ninth Annual High School Juried Art Show will continue as planned.

The only caveat: the entire exhibition will take place online.

Prince Albert and surrounding area students in Grades 9 to 12 are invited to submit photographs of their artwork, which will be curated in a virtual gallery.

“It’s a good way for up and coming artists who want to get into that field to get a feel of what it’s like to submit an artwork and then to showcase in an exhibition,” Mann Art Gallery Educator Danielle Castle told paNOW.

Castle will also select five winners of the show who will receive cash prizes.

Aside from the obvious logistical challenges posed by conducting the exhibition online, Castle explained many student artists don’t have access the projects they may have been working on in school before the facilities shut down.

“They would either have to pick something out from home or create something new,” she explained.

“I definitely really want to highlight that they can use any medium. It doesn’t have to be fancy acrylic paint, they could maybe use their sibling’s tempera paint.”

Aside from seeing the work of young emerging artists, the show is also a window into what matters to youth today.

“Usually with an exhibition too of this sort you’ll see a theme come to play so we can see what our students are thinking about and creating and what kind of message they’re trying to send the world,” Castle said.

The deadline for submissions is May 1. Winners will be announced May 8.
