‘She said she was five months pregnant’: Candle Lake man comes to aid of rollover victim

Apr 8, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Robin Humm commutes from Candle Lake to Saskatoon for work everyday, but Wednesday’s morning drive was anything but routine.

The recent snowfall has left roads icy and near Neuanlage, roughly 40 km north of Saskatoon, the vehicle travelling in front of Humm’s, suddenly lost control and rolled in the ditch. Humm immediately pulled over and went to check on the driver. Upon reaching the SUV, Humm said he could see the driver was conscious.

“I tried the doors on the top of the vehicle and I think she was in shock. She didn’t realize I wanted inside the vehicle,” he said.

While another driver at the scene called 9-1-1, Humm accessed the vehicle by smashing the back window, and then crawled inside next to the driver. Using his CPR training, Humm began to assess the woman’s cognitive ability, asking her a number of questions including what was her name, and if she was hurt.

“Once we had realized she was awake, although she was in shock, she said she was five months pregnant and had previous complications,” Humm said.

Humm continued to sit and talk with the woman until the ambulance arrived, keeping her warm by covering her in blankets. And while continuing to talk to her, helped gather her personal items. He also made sure to remove any objects which may be in the way when paramedics arrived.

“I didn’t move her or anything because I know that’s a no no for first aid,” he explained, adding he made sure to keep the conversation simple, so as to not raise the woman’s stress levels any more.

“She was pretty rattled. She kept saying thank-you and she was worried about her pregnancy,” he said.

Rosthern and District Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the 26-year-old woman to hospital in Saskatoon.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service told paNOW the woman was listed in stable condition and had no distress during transit.
