COVID-19: No changes to waste collection

Apr 2, 2020 | 10:29 AM

As the pandemic casts a lengthening shadow of uncertainty over an increasing number of aspects of our lives, Prince Albert waste collection remains constant.

City Sanitation Manager Nisar Ghani told paNOW there have been no major changes in terms of garbage and recycling pick-ups. Meanwhile the landfill remains open but far fewer people are dropping off items.

The city has seen higher volumes of trash in the bins during the past few weeks, but not enough to necessitate additional pick-ups.

“There is nothing that requires us to increase collection,” Ghani said. “It’s still under control.”

Waste collection crews have been instructed not to get out of their trucks or touch bins to limit their exposure to germs. Ghani explained the vehicles have an automated function that collects the refuse. Crews have also been supplied with gloves and sanitizer.

Ghani said the city hasn’t had issues with the public in terms of waste collection.

“My only message for people is be safe and stay home,” he said.
