Vandals go off-roading through children’s playground

Mar 24, 2020 | 12:00 PM

A little more than a week after a truck and snowmobile tore through the Alfred Jenkins Playground, those responsible remain at large.

The incident happened on the evening of March 16. Video evidence shows two vehicles driving through the accessible playground.

Several signs were knocked down and damage to the specialized surfacing at the playground is being assessed by city crews. Parks Manager Tim Yeaman told paNOW the city won’t know the exact dollar figure for awhile.

“We won’t be able to tell until we get a little more thaw out there so we will be doing a little more investigative work in the coming weeks,” he said.

The playground was officially opened last summer and is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and one of only five across the country. The equipment is designed to accomodate youth with both physical and intellectual disabilities. Fortunately it does not appear any of the actual equipment was damaged.

“The big concern is just the disregard for the investment into our community,” Yeaman said.

Charlene Tebbutt, a spokesperson for the Prince Albert Service, told paNOW officers have received a number of tips and are following up on some leads.

Those responsible for damaging the playground’s infrastructure and surfacing will be subject to a $580 fine and possible seizure of their vehicle.

A fresh blanket of snow still cannot conceal the damage done last week. (Nigel Maxwell/paNOW Staff)
