Classes still in session at Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses across the province including in Prince Albert are carrying on amidst the COVID-19 outbreak.

Cheryl Schmitz, who serves as the institutions director of emergency operations explained they have not been forced to cancel classes, but administrators are preparing for the possibility.

“Right now, our deans are just compiling a list of programs that potentially could go partially online or all, all together online,” she said.

Schmitz added there are programs that can’t be taught online. In those cases where a program cannot be delivered online, Schmitz said they would look at expanding the semester. She stressed plans surrounding alternative delivery are only being done as contingency.

The institution would suspend classes if that was recommended by the chief medical health officer. As of now they have not been advised to cancel classes.

“Right now, we are following the directives of the province,” Schmitz said.

The institution is taking precautions, Schmitz said they have cancelled or postponed all events and activities having nothing to do with academic programs. She said the decision to do this came after Saskatchewan Polytechnic had discussions with the province’s two universities and regional colleges.

Schmitz added the school has a pandemic emergency response team, which is working to deal the situation.

“This is just one of the many events that, that team has been preparing for,” she said.
