P.A. Catholic churches urged to take precautions

The Diocese of Prince Albert is asking churches to take precautions to protect against the Covid-19.

In a letter on the diocese website, Bishop Albert Thévenot made a number of recommendations to help churches and liturgies protect against spread of the virus.

In total the bishop’s letter outlines nine recommended precautions. These precautions include placing hand sanitizer at entrances. Those greeting parishioners are asked to avoid physical contact.

P.A. Diocese spokesperson Louis Hradecki said precautions like these have been put in place to deal with issues in the past.

“The last time I think a letter of this nature was sent out, I believe was 2009, that had to do with H1N1,” he said.

The bishop’s letter also recommends holy water fonts to be drained and that liturgical vessels be cleaned with soap and water after being used. The chalice will also not be offered at celebrations.

“Just good measures to be practiced so that there’s a low risk of spreading,” Hradecki said.

Heading forward, Hradecki said the diocese will be keeping an eye on the situation.

“That is pretty well all that’s going to be happening at this time,” he said.
