Tow truck drivers rally to share important message

Some Prince Albert tow truck companies want to remind drivers about the importance of slowing down and moving over when they see flashing lights.

On Wednesday evening drivers from Gateway North Towing, Auto Rescue Towing and Doctor John’s Towing set up alongside Highway 2 north of the city with their lights on to spread awareness about the importance of drivers slowing down and moving over.

Danny Goodwin, owner of Gateway North Towing said while they were out on the highway, they were reminded why it is important to promote this message to drivers.

“Last night with all those trucks on the side of the road we had two people that did not move over and attempted to go by us all in the lane that we were standing in at a full 60 miles an hour,” he said.

Goodwin, who took the lead in organizing the event Wednesday evening, said they chose the location they did as it was most convenient for the companies taking part. He said they had around 10 trucks out on the side of the road.

Other drivers and companies across Canada were out on the roads trying to get the message out. In Saskatchewan, Goodwin said companies in LIoydminister and Saskatoon also planned to take part.

Goodwin explained drivers failing to slow down and move over has serious consequences for tow truck operators.

“One tow truck driver a week loses his life in North America. Those are the stats,” he said.

Goodwin added drivers have been getting better about slowing down and moving over, but said the situation is still not good enough as some people still are not getting the message.

“It’s getting better than it was years ago, but there still a long ways to go,” he said.
