As expected, the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) has postponed all operations due to COVID-19 “until further notice.”

The CHL announced all three of its leagues, including the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, have all suspended their games.

“Following a conference call with the WHL Board of Governors, the Western Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019-20 WHL season, effective immediately,” WHL Commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement. “The WHL takes the safety of our players, officials, staff, fans, and everyone associated with the WHL very seriously. We will continue to monitor ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19. Our goal is to return to play when it is safe and reasonable to do so.

“We thank WHL fans and partners for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented time.”

The Prince Albert Raiders play their games in the Western Hockey League. They were scheduled to play on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre against the Moose Jaw Warriors. They did not practice on Thursday.

“The Prince Albert Raiders are in full support of today’s decision made by the Western Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey League to pause the regular season until further notice,” the Raiders said in their own statement. “The health and safety of our players, coaches, staff, volunteers, and fans is our utmost concern. We will continue to monitor information and developments provided by the WHL and the CHL, Saskatchewan Health Authority, as well as other local and national authorities.

“The Raiders will have more information for Season Ticket Holders, ticket buyers, and our corporate partners in the near future.”

On Wednesday, the Seattle Thunderbirds and Everett Silvertips both announced they were going to play their remaining games at home, but have those contests closed to the public.

This announcement comes hours after the NHL decided to pause its games and operations due to the coronavirus.
