‘Why would anybody be that cruel?’: baby lambs found discarded south of Prince Albert

A possible case of animal cruelty is being investigated by the Prince Albert RCMP detachment.

Last week the stiffened remains of four baby lambs were discovered near the junction of Highways 2 and 11. Wendy Fyrk made the alarming discovery after noticing a suspicious looking black garbage bag in the ditch. After stopping and taking a closer look, she discovered the lambs covered by a ridge of snow.

“What is the point? Why would anybody be that cruel?” she asked.

Fyrk said she believes somebody tossed the lambs and added there were signs the lambs were not very old.

“They were maybe like 24 hours old. One still had its umbilical cord hanging off it,” she said.

Fyrk said she took the animals to Park Range Veterinary Services, where a veterinarian confirmed the animals were born alive, and had even been cleaned by their mother. The animals were later cremated with assistance from a staff member at the Prince Albert SPCA.

“I was thinking somebody stole them because where they were located is nowhere near anybody that has any of these sheep so how would they get there,” Fyrk asked.

The owners of the Dorper lambs have yet to come forward. Staff Sgt. Brian Kelly with Prince Albert RCMP told paNOW members at the detachment hope someone will come forward and provide information regarding why the dead lambs were there.

“It’s tough to say whether there is some sort of criminal or municipal type thing going on but really we just kind of wanted a little more information to make that assessment,” he said.
