Mar 10, 2020 | 3:27 PM

A man with less than three months remaining on his sentence at Saskatchewan Penitentiary has died and the cause remains under investigation.

Curtis McKenzie, 27, died while in custody on March 9, 2020.

At the time of his death, McKenzie had been serving a federal sentence of two years and one day for Breach of Recognizance and Break and Enter (Not Dwelling-House).

A spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada confirmed the sentence commenced on May 30, 2018 and was calculated to end on May 30, 2020.

Prior to his latest sentence, McKenzie had served other convictions at the prison. At one time while in solitary confinement, McKenzie became suicidal and cut his nose off.

Next of kin have been notified and as in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said they will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
