20th annual Round Dance brings song, dance and friendship

The Northern Lights Casino 20th annual Round Dance on Saturday was a celebration for staff and a chance to remember former colleagues.

General Manager Richard Ahenakew said it was also a chance to say prayers for elders, veterans and leaders in the community.

“Just a good clean way to have a nice night and celebrate life itself,” he told paNOW.

The event was held at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre, where the festivities were started off by a feast followed by the round dance.

“We have dancing tonight, we’ll have different singers getting up and taking a lead role and singing at the drums,” he explained.

Throughout the evening they had a midnight lunch and plenty of different speakers.

“The big thing is the song, the dance and the friendship,” he added.

Some of the singers Ahenakew said perform with other drum groups and he said they are some of the best in North America.

He said he was happy with how many people made the trip considering the blizzard like weather Prince Albert experienced last night and how some had come from a long way away.

“We don’t have to encourage them to get up and dance, they encourage each other,” he explained. “It’s the same as a powwow, you’ll see people going to sit with each other telling stories catching up. You’ll see old friends getting together and catching up and how things have been going but then you’ll also see people sit down and make new friends out there.

“The environment is it’s a very incredible feeling to see all that, but especially to see the kids out there having fun, taking a chance to learn from their elders, to ask questions, have access to so much great history that’s sitting around the dance floor here tonight,” he added.
