Prince Albert Gymnastics Club hosts annual invitational

The Prince Albert Gymnastics Club staged their annual invitational called Werk the Runway on the weekend.

The club has been hosting invitationals for many years but started this one last season and Michael Amouri, executive director of the club, said suggested it has taken off.

“So, this year we have approximately 300 gymnasts from all across Saskatchewan and Alberta here competing today,” Amouri told paNOW.

The event took place at the club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with participants from beginner to national level.

“This is also a provincial qualifier for all these athletes but we try to make sure we keep the fun involved in it as well. Youth sport should have that aspect of it,” he said. “So they can have a more relaxed atmosphere and don’t feel the pressure so much to hit that provincial score.”

Depending on what level the gymnast is on, there is different criteria and scores they have to meet in order to make it to provincials.

“If they do well it’s promising that they will end up at provincial championships which are being held this year in May in Yorkton,” he added.

The gymnasts took part in a variety of different events throughout the weekend including vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

“Gymnastics is not like many other sports [in that] there’s no down time; it’s a full year sport,” he said. “As soon as you’re done competition season, you’re prepping for the next one. These kids train anywhere from six hours to 20 hours depending on their level.”
