Hoback introduces bill to help cover security costs

Feb 28, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert’s member of Parliament is introducing a bill to help homeowners upgrade the security of their properties.

Randy Hoback brought forward a private member’s bill which, if passed, would provide a non-refundable tax credit of up to $5,000 to help property owners pay for security upgrades. Hoback explained the idea for the bill came from discussion he and his party colleagues had with constituents all over the country.

“It’s the type of things that we would of heard in our town hall meetings,” he said.

Hoback said the bill would help people pay for security upgrades such as monitoring systems, bars for windows, or gated entryways. He added a tax credit could be an incentive for people to make those upgrades.

The P.A. MP is hopeful the bill will be passed and become law. Hoback said he received bipartisan positive feedback. He plans to meet with fellow members who sit on the relevant committees.

“There’s nothing really partisan or controversial in it; it’s pretty straight forward,” he said.

Hoback wasn’t able to provide a specific timeline on when the possible legislation could be passed. He said it depends on decisions made by house leaders.
