Best Cultural Festival: Tapestrama

Tapestrama showcases P.A.’s beauty and diversity

With nearly sixty years in the city, Prince Albert Multicultural Council (PAMC) is many things to many people.

For some, it’s where they learned to speak English with confidence through free language classes or the place that helped them find their first job in a new country.  For others, it’s the bright Central Avenue office they stop in to warm up while passing through downtown or waiting for the bus.

But perhaps what the organization is best known for is its huge annual community events. Among the most popular are its lively Canada Day celebrations and critically acclaimed weekend-long festival, Tapestrama, which has been named the Best Cultural Festival by the 2020 B.O.B. Awards.

“One of our goals is cultural awareness and integration, showing people the beautiful diverse cultures in our community,” explained Executive Director Michelle Hassler. “Through our multicultural events and activities we are able to do that.”

Hassler added the events are an important opportunity for their newcomer clients to meet people.

“We encourage our clients to participate and volunteer to really get to know the community,” she said. “ So they feel welcome and confident in their new country, in their new home.”

Conservative estimates put attendance at last year’s Tapestrama at 1,800 for the two-day event. The extravaganza of food, dance, and performance packed Plaza 88 and drew world-class talent including the Philippines’ top contemporary dance group Powerdance.

“We’re so thankful the community has embraced us. It’s been really amazing to watch Tapestrama grow over the years,” said Hassler. “And we’re grateful to have so many supportive sponsors who make it possible.

With nearly six decade behind them, the organization has no plans of slowing down.

“PAMC will always be here,” said Hassler
