The public now has the chance to buy meat made by students at Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Prince Albert.

The school campus is now home to a retail meat shop, which will offer a variety of products, ranging from beef to poultry. The meat is courtesy of students in the school’s retail meat program.

“You name it we make it, so everything is student made here, everything is student produced,” Don Cyr, culinary and meat instructor with Saskatchewan Polytechnic said.

Cyr added retail meat students will also be operating the store and selling the meat. The facility was completed last January and will be open on a more regular basis. This week the shop is set to be open on Thursday and Friday but will generally open Wednesday to Friday, 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Cyr said in the past meat produced by students in the program had been sold at the cafeteria.

“Now that we have our own shop, of course it’s a little nicer to work with and we can do a lot more product that’s for sure,” he said.

The instructor said the school’s retail meat program, which was launched a number of years back has proved to be popular, with people coming from all over the province to study in the 22 week program. Cyr said there has been a demand for the program’s students, with some going to work for established businesses and others setting up their own operations.

“The whole industry’s kind of been reviving here,” he said.

Editor’s note: this story was amended to clarify the store’s opening times.
