Curfew and big ticket item set to dominate council meeting

Feb 24, 2020 | 2:16 PM

Prince Albert city council could vote to close public walkways between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The bylaw aimed at combatting property crime passed first and second reading at the last city council meeting at the end of January. Before it is put to a final vote on Monday, councillors will hear from a resident who opposes the measure, particularly the fact that the curfew bylaw would include the recently completed Rotary Trail.

Paying for the pump house

At the same meeting, the city’s politicians will consider applying for a grant that could cover nearly 75 per cent of the cost of a new raw water pump house at the water treatment plant. In November, councillors were shocked to learn the estimated cost of the project ballooned from the initial estimate of $4.5 million to $10.1 million. Now city administration is recommending P.A. apply for funding based on an estimated $15 million figure.

Cannabis, money for sporting events, real estate also on the table

Also on the agenda, councillors are set to discuss potentially restricting the number of cannabis vendors in the city, $100,000 of funding for major sporting events, and the sale of a downtown police building. The city has received three offers for the Criminal Investigations Division building. City administration is recommending the office be sold to an orthodontic practice, the owners of which placed the highest bid.
