P.A. Kinsmen celebrate club centennial

The Kinsmen Club is marking 100 years of service in Canada.

Brad Amy, former president of the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club, said the national organization’s roots in Canada can be traced back to Hamilton, Ont. The initial motivation to begin the club was to give young men a way to help their communities, he said.

The longtime Kinsmen member said since the local club was established just over 90 years ago, they have made some real contributions to the community.

“Millions of dollars. It’s crazy. We’ve done the water slides, we’ve done all sorts of stuff at Kinsmen Park,” he said.

On the provincial side the Kinsmen raised million of dollars with the Telemiracle Telethons. Amy said it’s nice to travel around the city and see all of the businesses which support the campaign by taking donations and volunteering to help.

The city of P.A. has recognized the club by declaring Feb. 20 Kinsmen and Kinette Day.

Currently the local club has over 20 active members. Amy believes the local organization has been able to continue to recruit members due in large part to their mission.

“I think it’s a belief in Kinsmen and a belief in people helping people and giving something back to the community,” he said.

Jon Fraser, the current president of the P.A. club, said it is an exciting time for the local membership with the national anniversary and the Telemiracle right around the corner. He said the latest goals for the club will be to start and continue some local community projects and increase club membership. Some projects will focus on the club’s centennial.

“We do have community projects that will be going out within the next couple months,” he said.
