Baseball season my still be a little while off, but some young Prince Albert players are working to get ready.

Wednesday afternoon at the Alfred Jenkins Field House, players took to the turf to take part in spring training pitching camp.

The camp is being led by Garnet Jensen, who has pitched not only at college level in the United States, but also played professionally in Japan.

Jensen said in the wintertime, training is important for local players, especially those not playing other sports.

“Once the snow is gone, we’re outside playing and the season starts up pretty fast,” he said.

The training sessions started on Tuesday and are set to conclude Thursday afternoon. Jensen said players will focus on some basic mechanics drills to help players work back into game shape.

Jensen explained when he started playing the sport, there were no training options available due to a lack of year-round facilities.

“It was pretty much a four, three-month sport back then,” he said.

Jensen returned to P.A. three years ago after coaching in Kelowna B.C. He added now that he is back in the city, he is happy to offer his knowledge both as a player and coach.

“Really just trying to improve the quality of play, get some more interest in baseball, growing the game here and, you know, giving kids the chance to be able to move on, move up in levels,” he said.
