Bears’ slide increases to seven games after ND sweep

Feb 16, 2020 | 6:09 PM

The Prince Albert Northern Bears’ losing skid is now at seven games, after a pair of narrow defeats on the road to the Notre Dame Hounds. The Bears lost 2-1 in overtime on Saturday and 2-1 in regulation on Sunday.

The Bears didn’t have much trouble manufacturing goals for most of the season, but their offence has run dry in during their losing skid. They’ve scored just five goals in that span, and were shutout twice. They also haven’t managed to score more than one goal in a game since their last victory on Jan. 4 in a 3-2 win over the Swift Current Wildcats.

Bears goaltender Janae Neufeld made 28 saves on 30 shots in the overtime loss on Saturday. Kiara Stewart had the lone Bears’ goal. Claire Nimegeers had the overtime winner.

On Sunday, Dani Day made 21 saves on 23 shots. Mackenzie Mayo score the lone goal for the Bears.

The Bears, who are now in fifth place after spending much of the season in ranked in third, have four games remaining on their schedule. They’ll take on the Battlefords Sharks on Feb. 29 and March 1 on the road, then finishing the regular season against the Saskatoon Stars on home ice on March 7 and 8.
