Love was in the air in Prince Albert on Valentine’s Day and it was celebrated in a very classy and often romantic way at the local legion.

The Valentine’s Day Dance brought people of all ages to spend an evening of enjoyment at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2 Friday evening.

Missy Alexander, who is on the executive board for entertainment for the local legion, said they try to do a Valentine’s Day dance every year.

The free event was open to the public and you could even buy a rose for a special someone.

“I just love to have events like this because I know for myself when I’m looking for something to do, I don’t want to have to pay a cover charge to get in,” Alexander said. “You’re paying six something for a drink you know you have to pay for a meal and all that adds up.”

The crowd was a mixture of members and non members of the legion. Alexander said they’ve been actively trying to offer more events open to the public to encourage people to attend.

Veteran Loyd Smith and his wife Irene Dobson went to enjoy the dance and have been married for 15 years.

The 94 and 91-year-old met at the legion at a dance they were hosting at the time.

“Somebody told me about this Loyd Smith and I should get to meet him,” Dobson explained. “So I came one night and there was a supper and I asked him to dance and we danced the rest of the night together.”

The couple married two years later and Dobson conceded they have slowed down a little on the dance floor since then.

“I love dancing and he’s a good dancer,” Dobson added.

Smith said it is important to get out the legion events.

“That’s our life really; we come down here every day practically,” he said.

They’re both grateful to still be able to get on the dance floor because Smith said a year ago, he was struggling with health issues. Friday night was the first time they were able to make their moves since then.

“Yeah I come back pretty good, but I can’t do it like I used to,” he said. “I did for a while, but my leg was tiring out there.”

Randy and Shelley Krammer were also taking part in the festivities. The two have been together for 25 years and try to go dancing once every couple of months. Valentine’s Day is also an important day for the couple.

“It’s important, it’s a chance for both of us to show our appreciation for each other so we do try to celebrate it,” Randy said. “It’s a great social out to you know the nicest people go to dances like this. They’re friendly, they’re agreeable, they’re positive and you just meet the nicest people here.”
