P.A. residents feel the chill as temperatures sank below -40 C

Feb 13, 2020 | 12:04 PM

Prince Albert and area woke up to one of the coldest mornings of the year.

Environment Canada reported -40.3 C as the low point. Although it may have felt like, it wasn’t even the coldest day of 2020.

“Jan. 16, it got down to –42 C,” Meteorologist Terri Lang told paNOW. “We have very short memories when it comes to weather.”

While -40 C seems like it should be breaking and shattering records, the all time benchmark for Feb. 13, was -44.4 C set in 1936. Something to note while chatting to friends at coffee row, the last time this day’s temperature was this cold was 1970.

The good news is the arctic high pressure which brought the chilly temperatures, move off Thursday afternoon.

“It’s slowly moving out so this will be the coldest of the cold weather for now,” Lang explained.

Lang said the next 10 days will see temperatures hang around normal values.

“30-year averages have highs around –8 C with overnight lows around –20 C. Sort of in and around there, sometimes a little warmer, sometimes a little colder.”

The coldest part of the province this morning was Key Lake, that weather station reported temperatures of -41.3 C at 5 a.m. this morning.
