Sharks Swim Club Stars Shine at BrainSport Long course swim meet

The Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club went to the BrainSport long-course swim meet with a lot of ambitions and returned back with a lot of success!

Twenty-three swimmers from the Prince Albert Sharks Swim club participated in this swim meet from Feb 7-9 in Saskatoon.

“There were a huge number of personal best times achieved,” said head coach Dr. Hazem Hussein, “and this shows a massive development of the performance level of our swimmers competing against other top swimmers from different clubs and provinces — Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.

Highlights from the swim meet:

Altogether, seven “AA” times were posted by swimmers from the Sharks, and two new age-group swimmers achieved their first “AA” times ever.

Two Master swimmers broke three unofficial provincial records. Two para swimmers achieved the provincial time standard and qualified to compete in the provincial championship, which will be held next month in Winnipeg.

Sharks swimmers achieved more than 25 “A” times.

Chris Hansen, a master swimmer, “unofficially” broke the provincial record in the 50- and 100-metre freestyle for men age 50-54.

Karin Ferris, a master swimmer, “unofficially” broke the record in the 50-metre breaststroke for women ages 45-49.

Ali Diehl, a para swimmer, achieved personal best times in 50- and 100-metre breaststroke and 50-metre freestyle. She achieved the provincial qualifying time in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Soren Hansen had AA times in 50-, 100- and 200-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle. He qualified for finals in all of his events and placed first in the 400-metre individual medley, second in the 200-metre individual medley, fourth in 100-metre breaststroke and seventh in 50-metre freestyle.

Sophie Bilodeau came second in 100-metre breaststroke, with a new personal best time. She also placed second in the 200-metre breaststroke, fifth in the 50-metre breaststroke and sixth in the 200-metre individual medley.

Camryn Cooling earned an “AA” in 800-metre freestyle with a new personal best time. She also had an A time in the 400-metre freestyle and the 50-metre backstroke, with personal best times in both events. She qualified for finals in both the 400-metre freestyle and 100-metre backstroke.

Mackenzie.Emery swam personal best times in 200-metre individual medley, 100- and 200-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke. She qualified to the finals in all of her events except the 50-metre backstroke. She achieved five A times.

Clara Gelhorn achieved AA time for the first time ever in the 100 freestyle and qualified for the provincial championship. She had personal best times in 50-, 100- and 200-metre butterfly and in 50-, 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-metre freestyle. She achieved five A times and qualified to the final in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre butterfly and the 100- and 400-metre freestyle.

Ava Helgason qualified to the final in 50-metre breaststroke and 100- and 200-metre backstroke. She achieved eight “A” times and personal best times in all events.

Abigail Anderson-Woodsworth qualified to the final in 100-metre backstroke, 200-metre individual medley and 100- and 200-metre breaststroke. She had personal best times in all of her events and achieved the future stars time standard in 50-metre freestyle and 100-metre breaststroke.

Jenna Pshebnicki had personal best times in all of her events: 50-, 100- and 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke, 100- and 200-metre butterfly, 100- and 200-metre breaststroke and 200-metre individual medley. She qualified to the final in the 50-metre breaststroke and 100-metre butterfly.

Mackenzie Naytowhow achieved “A” time in 50-metre freestyle and was one second off the AA time . She achieved three “A” times and personal best times. She qualified to the final in 50- and 400-metre freestyle and 100- and 200-metre backstroke.

Patience Soderberg-Tilden had personal best times in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre breaststroke.

Sarah Alam had personal best times in 50-, 100- and 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke and 50-, 100-, and 200-metre backstroke.

Rebecca Fines, a paraswimmer, had personal best times in 50-metre breaststroke, 50- and 100-metre butterfly and 100-metre freestyle.

Frenzie Altavano had personal best times in 100- and 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre butterfly.

Kaianne Best had personal best times in 50-metre butterfly, 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre breaststroke.

Avery McDonald had personal best times in 50- and 100-metre breaststroke and 100-metre freestyle.

Sophie McDonald had personal best times in 50- and 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre breaststroke.

RaeAnna Huybrecht had personal best times in 50-metre breaststroke and 50-metre freestyle.

Joy Friesen, a masters swimmer, came fifth in the 50-metre butterfly and had a new personal best time.

“All of the swimmers have worked hard in training this season,” said Head coach, Dr. Hazem Hussein. “The results they have achieved are down to their dedication and hard work.

“We are pleased with our swimmers’ results and performance. The club offers a variety of programs to meet the kids’ potentials and ambitions not only on the competitive level but also on the non-competitive level. Way to go Sharks!”
