Welke wins in his long awaited return to the Mintos’ crease

Feb 8, 2020 | 9:50 PM

After being forced to watch his Prince Albert Mintos from the stands for the past two months, Spencer Welke didn’t show any rust on Saturday night as he dug his skates into the familiar crease of the Art Hauser Centre.

Welke made 23 saves on 25 shots to help the Mintos beat the second place Moose Jaw Warriors 4-2. Welke was dealing with a knee injury, which kept him out of game action since Dec. 10. It was the Joel Favreau show in his stead, playing all 12 games in Welke’s absence. He finally got some deserved rest on Saturday.

Turner McMillen did his part to hep give some run support for Welke. He scored twice, opening the scoring for the Mintos in the second and scoring their insurance goal in the third period on the power play. The Mintos were down 2-1 after two periods of play, but exploded for three in the third, with goals for Dawson Springer, Ashton Ferster and McMillen.

Kyle Forster and Ben Wourms-Rowe scored for the Warriors.

With the win, the Mintos are up to 51 points through 40 games (25-14-0-1), tied for third with the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Mintos are hosting the Tisdale Trojans for their next game on Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
